Investment Research Guides

Plain-language guides to understanding institutional ownership data and SEC 13F filings.

How to read 13F data

13F filings show what institutions held, not what they think next.

  • Compare a stock’s holder count and value quarter-over-quarter to spot accumulation or exits. Browse stocks
  • Check a manager’s top positions and concentration before reading any single trade as a signal. Browse funds
  • Treat the latest quarter as a 45-day-lagged snapshot of long US-equity positions only. 13F limitations
  • Cite the mixed-vintage corpus snapshot when you need manager counts and reported value with filing dates attached. 13F statistics

Informational only, not investment advice. Positions may have changed materially since the filing date.

About this data

How PlainFundData works, and why you can trust these numbers

What this site is

PlainFundData is a plain-language reference for U.S. institutional ownership. We ingest SEC EDGAR Form 13F-HR filings into a searchable database of 360+ funds and 7,700+ securities so every holder count, reported value, and quarter-over-quarter move traces back to the manager's own filing.

Editorial process

  1. Source. Download Form 13F-HR and amendment filings directly from SEC EDGAR for each reporting quarter.
  2. Verify. Parse share counts and market values exactly as filed; map CUSIPs via the SEC's official 13F securities list without inventing positions.
  3. Publish. Compile per-fund and per-security pages with concentration, movers, and vintage stamps, always linking readers back to the EDGAR record.

Editorial independence & corrections

PlainFundData is independent and accepts no payment for coverage, placement, or rankings. Found a figure that looks wrong? Use the contact page with the URL and value; we compare it to the EDGAR filing and correct the pipeline when the error is ours. See our methodology for source attribution and refresh cadence.
