The question & how we answer it
Among the institutional investment managers filing SEC Form 13F-HR that PlainFundData tracks, which carry the largest aggregate portfolio values, how many distinct Section 13(f) securities do they hold, and how concentrated are their reported books?
This page ranks the institutional managers in our dataset by the total reported value of their SEC Form 13F-HR equity book, drawn live from a single query against the filers table, every figure here is rendered from the filing data at request time, never hardcoded or estimated. 13F-HR is filed by managers with at least $100 million in qualifying assets within 45 days of each quarter-end and reports long US-listed equity positions only.
Because 13F covers long equities only, "reported value" is a floor on a manager's true size, not its total AUM: short positions, cash, non-US holdings and most derivatives are excluded by rule, and the 45-day lag means the latest quarter is a quarter-old snapshot. Rows with null or zero reported value are excluded rather than shown as zeros. See the methodology page for the full pipeline, source vintage and column lineage.

Findings
Top entity in the ranking
The top-ranked filer is Neuberger Berman Group LLC, with a reported portfolio value of $123.8B. The full top-10 is shown in the table above. Nothing here is hardcoded, and when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission publishes a revision, the ranking updates automatically on the next data refresh.
Distribution shape
The gap between the top-ranked record (123,795,037,491) and the 10th-ranked record (24,705,675,950) characterizes how concentrated the top of the distribution is. Where the top value is many multiples of the median value of the visible set, the population is highly concentrated, a small number of entities accumulate the bulk of the measured quantity. Where the top and bottom of the visible set are close together, the distribution is relatively flat across the top end. The full distribution beyond this top-10 cut is summarized in the aggregate context section below and explored in the linked entity profiles.
Aggregate context
Across the full tracked population, here's how the top-10 ranking compares: how many filers qualify in total, the combined total across all of them, and the average per filer. Filers with no reported value are excluded from these figures, same as the ranking above.
Source provenance
The records in this ranking originate from U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, specifically the SEC EDGAR 13F-HR Institutional Investment Manager Filings. PlainFundData ingests the source vintage published by the agency and serves it directly from the current dataset, there is no separate static export that could go stale, and a fresh SEC filing batch is reflected within hours. The methodology page documents the source URL, the vintage date, and how the data is processed.
Why this ranking matters
Rankings like this one let a reader scan a population quickly and identify outliers, concentrations, and patterns that warrant deeper investigation. The detail pages linked from each entity in the table above give the full per-entity context: time-series history where available, related metrics from adjacent tables, and links onward to the underlying source records. The methodology page explains how an entity earns inclusion in the dataset and how the ranking column is computed at the source.
What this analysis cannot tell us
SEC Form 13F-HR captures only Section 13(f) securities, primarily US-exchange-listed equity securities, certain equity options, and a defined list of convertible debt instruments. The reported portfolio value reflects the most recent quarterly 13F-HR snapshot and excludes a manager's holdings in non-13(f) securities such as private equity stakes, sovereign debt, most fixed income, foreign equity not cross-listed in the US, commodities, currencies, and short positions. Form 13F-HR reports long positions only; short positions and economic exposure via derivatives are not disclosed. Reported values are based on the manager's chosen valuation methodology (typically last-trade-price on the report date for equity securities), and the 45-day filing deadline after each quarter-end means the data reflects a quarter-old snapshot of holdings. Confidential treatment requests granted by the SEC allow some managers to withhold disclosure of newly-initiated positions for a limited period, so the most recent quarter's filings may understate the active book. Portfolio value rankings reflect AUM in 13(f) securities only and do not represent total assets under management or firm-level investment activity outside Section 13(f).
