Research question
Across the Section 13(f) securities PlainFundData tracks, which are held by the largest number of distinct 13F-HR institutional managers, and how do those holder counts correspond to aggregate position value and share count?
Methodology
This ranking sorts every tracked security by institutional holder count and shows the top 10. Every figure comes straight from PlainFundData's current dataset, none of it is hardcoded, and the numbers update automatically whenever a new U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing batch is processed.
Reported dollar values are abbreviated to billions or millions; SEC Form 13F values filed after 2023 are reported to the nearest dollar, and counts are shown with thousand-separators.
This ranking reflects the most recent SEC filing data on record, and updates within hours whenever a new batch is processed. The methodology page documents the full data pipeline, source vintage, and how each column is derived.
Coverage and exclusions: securities with no reported holder count are excluded from this ranking rather than shown as zero. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission occasionally suppresses values for reasons of confidentiality, sample size, or quality control; those rows are excluded by design. If the underlying source later revises a value, the revised figure appears automatically the next time the data is refreshed.
Outliers are shown as published, without silent adjustment. Follow the source link on each row for context. For perspective beyond the top 10, the summary above anchors this ranking against the full tracked population, and a companion ranking on a related metric lets you compare how the same securities perform across different measures.
PlainFundData publishes its full methodology and source registry, and every figure here traces back to the original SEC filing via the entity link on each row, so you can verify any number directly against the public source.
See the methodology page for the complete data pipeline, source vintage, and how each figure is derived.

Findings
Top entity in the ranking
The top-ranked security is MICROSOFT CORP, held by 44 distinct 13F filers. The full top-10 is shown in the table above. Nothing here is hardcoded, and when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission publishes a revision, the ranking updates automatically on the next data refresh.
Distribution shape
The gap between the top-ranked record (44) and the 10th-ranked record (34) characterizes how concentrated the top of the distribution is. Where the top value is many multiples of the median value of the visible set, the population is highly concentrated, a small number of entities accumulate the bulk of the measured quantity. Where the top and bottom of the visible set are close together, the distribution is relatively flat across the top end. The full distribution beyond this top-10 cut is summarized in the aggregate context section below and explored in the linked entity profiles.
Aggregate context
Across the full tracked population, here's how the top-10 ranking compares: how many securities qualify in total, the combined total across all of them, and the average per security. Securities with no reported holder count are excluded from these figures, same as the ranking above.
Source provenance
The records in this ranking originate from U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, specifically the SEC Form 13F Institutional Investment Manager Disclosures. PlainFundData ingests the source vintage published by the agency and serves it directly from the current dataset, there is no separate static export that could go stale, and a fresh SEC filing batch is reflected within hours. The methodology page documents the source URL, the vintage date, and how the data is processed.
Why this ranking matters
Rankings like this one let a reader scan a population quickly and identify outliers, concentrations, and patterns that warrant deeper investigation. The detail pages linked from each entity in the table above give the full per-entity context: time-series history where available, related metrics from adjacent tables, and links onward to the underlying source records. The methodology page explains how an entity earns inclusion in the dataset and how the ranking column is computed at the source.
What this analysis cannot tell us
Institutional ownership breadth captures the count of distinct 13F-HR filers reporting a long position in the security as of the latest quarterly filing, drawn from the SEC EDGAR 13F-HR universe. The count does not reflect economic exposure via derivatives, short interest, retail ownership, insider holdings outside 13F reporting, or holdings by managers below the $100M Section 13(f) reporting threshold. Securities held broadly across institutional managers tend to be large-cap, index-constituent US equities; the ranking will systematically over-represent components of major US equity benchmarks and under-represent securities held by a smaller number of concentrated managers regardless of position size. Aggregate value across filers can double-count economic exposure in cases where the same underlying position is held via different vehicles or through layered manager-of-managers structures. Holder count and aggregate value reflect the most recent 13F-HR filings as of the data snapshot date and lag the live market by up to 45 days under the standard 13F filing deadline.
